The Cave in the Hills

Ali Baba was a poor woodcutter who spent long days among dry hills and thorny brush. One evening he saw a strange band of riders stop near a rocky slope. They did not look like farmers or merchants. They carried heavy bags, and their horses were tired but fast. Ali Baba hid behind a tree and watched as the men spoke a few clear words to the stone wall. At once, a hidden cave opened before them. The thieves went inside and came out later with their bags full of treasure. When they rode away, Ali Baba stepped closer, listened to the spoken words, and tried them for himself. The hidden cave opened. Inside were jars, coins, silk, and enough riches to make a poor man dizzy.

A Secret Too Easy

Ali Baba took only a little at first, hoping to feed his family and still keep the secret safe. He returned home with a smaller load than the thieves had carried, but even that little seemed like a miracle. His wife could hardly believe it. Together they hid the gold and promised not to speak of it. Yet secrets have a way of attracting attention. Ali Baba’s brother Cassim was richer and more proud. When he noticed that Ali Baba had money, he pressed him for the reason until the whole story came out. Cassim went to the cave himself, but once inside he grew nervous and forgot the spoken words. The cave stayed shut. The thieves returned, found him trapped, and the danger after discovery became terrible and real.

The Thieves Come Back

Ali Baba mourned his brother, but he also understood that the thieves would soon notice the loss. He tried to stay quiet and live simply. That would have been wise, but trouble was already moving toward his door. The thief captain searched the town for the person who had found the cave. His men watched the houses and marked anyone who seemed too lucky. At last one thief reached Ali Baba’s street and hid in a line of oil jars outside the house. Ali Baba’s clever housekeeper, Marjina, saw the stranger’s shadow and guessed the danger at once. She did not panic. She watched carefully, kept her voice calm, and prepared a surprise that the thief would never forget.

Marjina’s Cleverness

When night fell, Marjina made the hidden thief believe that the coast was clear. Then she poured boiling oil into the jars and stopped the attack before it could begin. Later the thief captain came in disguise, hoping to learn the secret of the cave with polite words and false smiles. Marjina saw through him too. She warned Ali Baba, and together they exposed the enemy before more blood could be shed. In the end, the cave did not bring safety, because treasure cannot protect a careless heart. Ali Baba lived with more comfort after that, but he never forgot how quickly luck can turn into danger. A secret found by chance can feed a family, yet if it is handled carelessly, it can also invite ruin.
