Raven Brings the Morning Light

A World in Darkness

Long ago, in a world in darkness, people moved by touch and by memory. The sea was there, the wind was there, and the cold cliffs were there, but the morning was hidden. Children asked their elders why the sky never opened. The elders only said that light had been taken away and locked up where no one could reach it. Raven heard these words and grew quiet. He was not the strongest bird, and he was not the most patient, but he was curious. Curiosity was often the first step in raven cleverness. He watched the black water, the stones, and the faces of the people. Then he decided that a hidden light should not stay hidden forever.

The Hidden Light

Raven followed the trail to a tall house above the shore, where a keeper guarded a carved box. He could smell warmth inside, though the lid was shut tight. For a while he sat still, as if he were only a tired bird. Then he listened. The keeper laughed with his family and never looked at the smallest things. Raven hopped closer, then closer still, until he found a way to slip inside. He did not break the door at once. He waited for the right moment, because cleverness is often quieter than strength. At last he pecked the latch, nudged the box, and a small shining pulse escaped into his beak. It was only a spark at first, but it burned like a promise.

Raven's Cleverness

The keeper woke too late. Raven flapped through the room, throwing confusion into every corner. He dropped the spark, caught it again, and flew out over the rocks. The light grew while he moved. It flashed against the ice, touched the waves, and split into bright pieces above the world. Some say Raven called to it and sent it climbing. Some say the light followed him because it wanted freedom as much as he did. However it happened, the dark broke open. There was no longer only night. There were reds, golds, and pale colors waking in the east. The people stared up as if they had never seen the sky before.

Morning Returns

When the first morning spread across the land, the cold felt less cruel. The hunters could find their paths. The children could play without fear. The elders thanked the sky, but they also spoke Raven's name, because his raven cleverness had changed the world. Yet Raven did not become a proud king. He flew on, black feathers shining with the memory of fire. Some stories say that is why his feathers are dark today. He carried the hidden light for a little while and gave it back to everyone. From then on, each dawn reminded the people that even a small creature can open a closed world.
